Katy Perry, born October 25, 1984, is an American singer, born in Santa Barbara, California. She became famous with her internet hit “Ur So Gay”. Her breakthrough single was “I Kissed a Girl”.
Katy is known for her flamboyant clothing style, often described as humorous, colorful, and occasionally accompanied by fruit-shaped accessories, predominantly watermelon. From her early childhood, being a creative dancer, she always desired to have her own style. Katy was inspired by the novel Lolita, which inevitably helped her transformation into an artist.
Her music career began in 2004, when she was signed to Columbia Records. However the label was restricting her artistic vision. Before being scrapped, Columbia’s idea was to pair Katy with the production team The Matrix to serve as a female vocalist. With the project shelved, she started recording on her own. Katy was widely acclaimed for her escalating music career and was consequently coined to be the “Next Big Thing” by Blender magazine.
Over the next year, her video to “Ur So Gay” was released and created online buzz, exposing herself to the music market. As popularity was gaining momentum, she spent on to promote her album “One of the Boys” through the radio stations, and the album’s lead single, “I Kissed a Girl” was released in March 2008, climbing quickly to the top of the charts. The album quickly reached number nine on the charts, and as of February 2009 has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
